Outdoor Education Print Email

This is a progressive learning experience for girls. Adults attend Outdoor education Courses in order to learn the necessary outdoor skills, and how to teach these skills to the girls. Learning to adapt and manage in an unfamiliar environment, learning to be responsible, and using decision-making skills all helps girls continue to build their self-confidence and self-esteem. Outdoor training is required whenever a leader plans to implement skilled outdoor activities. Since space is limited, participation in an outdoor education course requires a $5.00 refundable deposit. Deposit will be refunded if participant attends the course they have registered for or cancels seven days before the course begins. Please attach a check made payable to Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore to the council service center.

Basic Outdoor Skills

This course is designed for participants who wish to plan and implement an outdoor day with the troop/group. The curriculum includes health and safety planning with girls, outdoor cooking skills, basic knots and use of tools.

For Adults Only: This course provides skill training in the above areas. A prep session is required for this course for adults to plan their menu and purchase food items for the weekend. Outdoor training develops not only a leader's skills in the outdoor program but utilizes the patrol system for budgeting, menu planning, and shopping. Fee: $15.00

This course is designed for participants to experience additional outdoor skills such as pitching tents, advanced cooking methods (creating ways to cook out of common materials), lashing, and building a wash bin with poles. Leader Training 1 and Girl Scout Leadership Experience Training

Two courses have been designed for troop/group leaders and assistant leaders. Leader Training 1 (LT1) will provide the tools necessary for leaders to run a troop. Girl Scout Leadership Experience Training (GSLE) will help both leaders and assistant leaders to learn and carry out the Girl Scout program and guide girls with earning recognitions.

Are there prerequisites?

Volunteer Orientation

What to bring?

Please bring paper and pencil and confirmation of registration. LT1: Also bring a copy of Volunteer Essentials. GSLE: Bring a copy of your Age Level Journey Book as well as appropriate age level recognition book (Guide for Daisy Girl Scout Leaders, Brownie Try-It book, Junior Badge book, Interest Projects for Girls Ages 11-17)

What will I learn?

Leader Training 1 (LT1) is designed to aid new leaders in knowing the GSUSA and Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore policies, how to run a meeting, how to hold a parents meeting, Girl Scout traditions, planning with girls, handling troop funds health and safety standards, trip procedures and product sales. Girl Scout Leadership Experience Training (GSLE) is the new face of Girl Scouting. It is the center of the new Girl Scout Program which was created to help girls and adults develop their own leadership skills. Girls of different ages follow different "Journeys" towards developing themselves as leaders. They discover things about themselves and the world around them. They connect with their friends, other Girl Scouts, and families and take action in the community, locally and globally, to make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of the USA has designed a step by step course for leaders to understand the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience and provide direction for working with existing program materials. This course will show leaders of every age level how to lead the girls through their own leadership experience called GS Journeys as well as instructions on using badges, try-its and interest patches to enhance the leadership experience for girls and adults. This course has replaced the LT2 course.
